Wouldn’t it be great to have your finger on the pulse of the ability to purchase designer clothes? There are many websites out there such as Gilt Group, Editor’s Closet and many others that do feature sales on designer clothing and accessories.

While this is really good news, there are some things that you should know in order to take advantage of this rather short term, sample sales. The sales window is usually only about three days long and will include a very limited selection that will sell out very quickly.

While these are called “sample” sales, in most cases you’re not actually purchasing the samples. Sample sales were originally created to a designer’s name out to the public, as well as letting the designer sell any surpluses. Sample sales are also used to sell off last season’s lines.

To get access to these online sample sales you will need to get invitation codes. You can visit sites such as Row Nine, RueLaLa and more to obtain these invitations. While at your chosen sites, sign up for news and updates so you’ll be on top of when the sales are happening.

Make sure you shop early. Popular items, especially those with very popular designer labels will sell out first. When shopping online, if you see an item you want, put it in your cart. You don’t have to make a purchase decision until check out.

Invite your friends to also join the sale websites. You can receive discounts and credits at these sites for each friend that you refer that joins.

Thrift stores have gotten a bad reputation over the last couple of years. People tend to think that thrift stores are the shops where ugly clothes and furniture go to die. However, that is definitely not the case. There great clothing staples as well as unique items that you can find at thrift stores and the best part is, you will save money.

One of the best things to buy at thrift stores is children’s clothing. Anyone who has had a child knows that children out grown their clothing so quickly it is nearly impossible to keep up with them. In many cases, parents will buy an outfit for their child which the child will wear only once before the child out grows it. Many parents will drop of children’s clothing that is nearly new. Thrift stores offer a variety of children’s clothing so save a few dollars and buy clothing for your child from the thrift store.

Another great buy from thrift stores is books and specialty items. Everyday there are people who rush out to buy the newest fad book only to find that the book was not to their liking. Rather than shell out a large sum for a book off the shelf, check your local thrift store. The same can be said for speciality items. Items like juicers, pineapple cutters, and other oddball things that people think they want and then find that they never use are always at thrift store in mint condition. Save money and buy a speciality item from the thrift store.

Thrift stores sometimes suffer a bad rap because of the images they conjure up. Thoughts of dirty, smelly, stained or ripped clothing may come to mind. After all, why would anyone want to part with clothing that is still in fashion or wearable? As it turns out, there are ways to find fashionable and quality clothing in certain thrift stores. You just have to know where to look. Whether you’re on a search for Dereon clothes or Ann Taylor clothing, brand names and designer clothes fill the racks of many thrift stores. Here are a few tips:

Find the right thrift stores. Think of cities and neighborhoods where the local population dresses in your desired styles and brand names. Check to see if there are any thrift stores in the vicinity. People often donate their clothes to thrift stores, so the chance of finding your desired styles is higher in these locations.

Ask the thrift store personnel a few questions. Find out at what time of day they sort through the new donations. Also ask if the donations are made on particular days of the week. You’ll increase your chances of finding the best fashions if you’re there as soon as they’re placed on the rack.
